Can endometriosis symptoms be relieved with correct nutrition?

Dian Shepperson Mills, director of the Endometriosis and Fertility Clinic in London,

has created a pioneering nutritional program, which facilitates in managing endometriosis. It has been found that this therapeutic nutritional approach to endometriosis, can reduce pain by 50% and increase chances of pregnancy.

Mills has presented her results numerous times in conventions of the World Endometriosis Society (WES), of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), of the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) and others.

According to Mills’ nutritional recommendations, women with endometriosis should avoid:

  • Fats, especially saturated and trans-fats.
  • Red meat.
  • Full-fat dairy products.

There is a large possibility that these foods may contain large amounts of dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), i.e. chemicals that have an estrogenic effect, amongst other harmful actions on our organism.

  • Avoid caffeine, processed sugar, sweeteners, sodas, alcohol, salt, foods that contain conservatives and smoking.
  • Avoid consumption of white bread and pasta.

Mills advises that biological products are preferred. Otherwise remove vegetable and fruit skins.

  • Consume a great variety of raw fruits and vegetables.

Additionally, there are indications that oxidative stress and the free radicals it produces are associated with endometriosis. For that reason she recommends consumption of the following:

  • Vitamins A, C, D, E
  • Selenium
  • Vitamin B complex in order for the liver to be able to break down oestriadol into oestriol, which binds to fiber and, thus, can be excreted from the body. Therefore, by consuming foods rich in vitamin B (green leafy vegetables), the organism can regulate the removal of circulating oestrogens and this is essential for women suffering from endometriosis.
  • Iron
  • Ω3 fats (salmon, sardines, walnuts, seeds, olive oil)
  • Fibre (fruits, vegetables, whole-wheat products)
  • Clean filtered water (6–8 glasses daily)

Consume daily approximately 75 grams of protein derived from fish, poultry, eggs, low-fat dairy products and gluten-free.

Consume daily 2 portions of red or orange vegetables, 2 portions of green leafy vegetables and 2 pieces of fruit.

Good quality food supplements may be beneficial but make sure they do not contain yeast, gluten, wheat and sugar.
